Academic Dr Gillian Jein, Newcastle University, developed The Comfrey Almanac in collaboration with The Comfrey Project, Gateshead.

The 144-page publication brings together the socio-ecological knowledge and lived experience of the project’s members, including people rebuilding their lives in the North East after conflict and persecution, alongside long-standing community members, staff, artists and researchers. Shaped through interviews, workshops, recipes, gardening knowledge, storytelling and shared conversation, it reflects the multilingual and translocal character of The Comfrey Project.

The Almanac creates a lasting resource for knowledge developed within the community since the project was established by Mandy Jetter in 2002, while allowing contributors to be represented and credited on their own terms.

I led the design and full production management of the publication, working closely with Dr Jein, contributors, workshop artists and printers to create an accessible, sensitive and visually coherent editorial design.
